The Promised Land

Day 1, Morning to Afternoon
4-12-12 session

Destruction. Nothing is left of the Tribe. The village of tents have been destroyed, the people are missing or dead, the place has been picked clean. The Tribe has always been good to the characters and these turn of events has devastated them all. Everyone they knew is dead or missing. The characters: Coraline, Ja’th, Nadarr, and Seluku, they only have each other now in the harsh desert world of Athas.

The characters have lived a pretty peaceful life while with the Tribe: Game was always plenty, water from the well never dried up, and the monsters would tend to not come into the Farm’s territory. Though the crops were very few there, it got them by throughout the year. Now, things are different, the characters might pick up a farmer’s hoe and realize it is what will keep them alive from danger. But weapons are not the most important survival items for them, it’s actually the Chief’s words.

No one really remembers who was before him as chief, but then again, no one cared. He was loving, caring, fair, and just. What made him that way was because of his wisdom. He always had the right thing to say to each member of the Tribe. Some would use it to it’s full potential while others would squander it. To each of the characters, he has welcomed them into the Tribe despite what others might have said to these strangers. The Chief shared love and wisdom in his own way to each of them.

The characters, who were away in the chaos, come back to the Farm and begin to search the remains of their village and come across broken debris on top of the dying Chief. They try to heal him but realize he only has moments til death, so they take the moment to hear his parting words.

‘Heed my words, my children, my time is short. The Farm is no more, our land has been taken by an oppressor. It is no longer safe in this territory. Many have perished, others were taken by the unknown force. You are all that remains of the Tribe. Where were you in our time of need?’

Where were they indeed. Well, the characters decided that maybe there was something better for the Tribe rather than the Farm. For the past few morning hours they left the Farm to try and find better land to live on. Maybe some of them thought they could bring the Tribe there, maybe some of them though they could live on their own. Regardless, their time away from the Tribe spelled “Doom” to them all.

The characters are quite silent in their response as they only ask for forgiveness. The Chief winces in pain as some of the debris covering him shifts around on top of him, ‘Listen carefully,’ as he begins to cough, ‘One of you must lead the remaining members of our Tribe to a better world.’ He presents his chieftain feather to the group and continues, ‘I have told you in many stories of the land full of water and game. A place where we can finally call home: The Promised Land. Whoever holds the feather will take the responsibility of the Tribe to find the Promised Land. The good spirits of the land will be your guide. Follow them! But, a warning, the one who bears the feather will hold much stress as well as respect from the fellow tribesmen. So choose carefully.’

The group looks amongst each other, quiet to respond at first. Nadarr and Seluku make the suggestion that Coraline should be the Chieftain as she has been with the Tribe longer than any other people here. She also holds an affinity with the good primal spirits of the land and can communicate with them as the Chief directed. With a bit of hesitation, she takes the feather from the Chief and becomes the Chieftain of the Tribe.

The Chief strains, ‘Go now, search for survivors in hopes that the Tribe is still thriving. Remember, I will be with you always.’ And with that, the Chief passes away.

The group, in the midst of their sadness, realize they must search for survivors and equipment for themselves in the rubble. They do so and find wagon tracks leading North. They follow them in hopes to find any survivors or the evil forces that did this. They instead find Silt Runners who ambush them in their travels. They fight and the Tribe is victorious in slaying the beasts. They procure items and continue to search for the wagon and continue traveling a couple more miles in the heat.

They come across the abandoned wagon that is surrounded by Kruthiks. Ja’th, in compassion of his insect cousins, decides that the group should just try and sneak in to see what’s inside the wagon. They do notice another mile north is a half buried tower. Chieftain Coraline agrees, and Ja’th, with the help of the group, sneaks into the wagon and takes what few remains are inside it as much of the food and water that was in it is now scattered on the ground where the Kruthiks have scavenged. Ja’th doesn’t find any bodies at all as it seems they have been dragged north. He almost makes it back to the group but alerts the insect monsters to their presence and a fight ensues.

Day 1, Afternoon to Night
5-25-12 session

The group fought the Kruthiks and vanquished them finding more loot among the remains of the wagon (lucky for Nadarr, since he broke his axe in the fight, he found a new one made of stone). The group continues to a weathered, broken tower finding the the silt runners’ hideout. Two humanoid bodies lay bound inside the tower and the group charges in to save them. The fight turns ugly as Ja’th almost drops but luckily the group comes together strategically and they destroy many of the monsters though one of the silt runners escapes the tower. Ja’th and Coraline are able to save the dying hostage that day as well, so they have saved two people that day. The Tribe recognizes that one of the captured people is from the Tribe.

Day 2, Morning to Day 5, Morning
6-8-12 session

The group settles in for the night there in the tower. They gain some treasures and were able to save the captured people: Jericho and Kaldras. In the middle of the night, Jericho gives Coraline a small pouch that has The Desert Seed. He knows this item will be important in finding the Promised Land but he is scared to try and find it as it seems to be a very dangerous journey.

Realizing their trails to find more survivors of the Tribe has been lost to the blown sand over their paths, they agree to take Kaldras back to the road to find his elven family traders who he was with before he was captured by the Ssurran. He takes them to the road to the north and the group decides to head to Altaruk with them as bodyguards for Kaldras and his family of traders. The journey is long and arduous but they get to Altaruk.

Along the way they are attacked by raiders. Most are slaves and they are let go by the Tribe yet they mercilessly kill the lead raider after trying to intimidate him for information. Kaldras questions the group’s reasons and they basically say, “Kill or be killed. Slavery is wrong.” Kaldras lets it go but seems surprised.

After getting to Altaruk at the elven market the group thinks they are going to be paid for their troubles. But Kaldras has other plans: He betrays the party to try and capture the group to become slaves themselves. Kaldras is careful as the fight begins because he states he fears the same thing could happen to him as the other slaver trader who they killed earlier.

Day 5, Morning to Day 6, Morning
7-13-12 session

The group began to fight with the elves as they tried to take them captive. Ja’th deals a lethal blow to Kaldras and draws blood. In the midst of the scuffle, many Altaruk soldiers begin to pour into the elven market. The captain of the guard, Tellemon, asks what is happening. The Tribe tell the truth yet Kaldras says they are prisoners trying to escape. Tellemon can’t tell who to trust so he says the Gladiator pit will decide who is right.

They are all thrown in the local gladiator pit to “settle” their differences by trying to gain the most ceramic coins for their coffer. The “game” is short and while Kaldras looks to have the upper hand at the beginning, the Tribe is able to take a majority of the coins for themselves, even while being attacked by beasts.

Kaldras is dragged away by the guards to be put in prison along with some of his family members. He swears he will get the Tribe back one day for ruining his family like this. Tellemon rewards the group and asks if they wish to help him in exchange for the information they are looking for (who destroyed the Farm).

The group rests at a shady inn and, though they feel rested, some of their money was stolen in the night.

Day 6, Morning to Night
8-31-12 session

The group decided to take on Captain Tellemon’s job. He asks the group to investigate some murders happening inside the cells between the slaves. The group agrees for a monetary compensation and they are taken to the slave pits to be thrown in another bloodarena fight so that they look like normal slaves to the other slaves inside.

They fight a group of gith and are successful in defeating them. The crowd goes wild but the sounds of cheer change to moans of agony as the crowd yells that a murder has taken place in the stands. The Tribe is ushered out and confronted by a half-elf scribe named Selonius. He explains that Captain Tellemon has been murdered and that the governor of Altaruk, Arisphistaneles has taken a liking to the heroes and wishes for them to investigate the murder. The group agrees, even though they are confused on which job to take on now that their main contact is dead.

The group investigates the murder scene, the murder weapon, and witnesses who saw it which leads them to the Barracks of the militia. Trying to find a a large man and a dwarf who could be connected to the murder, the group talks to the guards in the barracks. They are lead to finding a dwarf and a half-giant talking in the back of the barracks rooms. The group confronts them, trying to reason with the two perpetrators. At first it seems a fight might break out, but with Ja’th’s and Seluku’s smooth talking the group is able to find out the truth.

It turns out the dwarf, Birk Suntouched (who works for the Governor) hired the goliath gladiator to kill Tellemon for the fact that Tellemon was plotting to expose Arisphistaneles as the leader of the cities’ cell group of The Veiled Alliance. Once Birk found out about Tellemon’s plans he had no time to tell the Governor so he decided to take action.

He asks the party to take him to the Governor to explain. The group agrees and they sneak the goliath and the dwarf out of the Barracks and to the Governor’s house. Arisphistaneles is glad to hear the good news and offers the heroes payment, a place to stay while in Altaruk, and a chance to join the Veiled Alliance. The group wonders why Tellemon would have them investigate the slaves and the Governor felt that maybe the captain was trying to get the Tribe out of the way so that he might have his plan go off without any problems in exposing the Veiled Alliance cell. The Governor feels that the Tribe is a good group of people who understand their cause and persists in asking them to join their group. The Chieftain, Coraline, feels this is a good plan to join the secret organization as they now will have a high powered friend who might aid them in their quest to finding who the Oppressor is. However, the Tribe is to be tested by the Governor.

Day 7, Morning to Afternoon
9-21-12 session

The group is asked to search for the legendary Vault of Darom Madar as trial to become members of the Veiled Alliance. In this fabled vault lies many treasures from the old trader House: House Madar. No one knows where the vault is, other than somewhere in the Tablelands so the governor gives the Tribe a letter encrypted in elven code. The letter is for Toramund, Chief of the Silver Hand Tribe who lives on the Tablelands and might be able to point the Tribe in the right direction. The group only knows that the letter is for Toramund only and that it was urgent news that might help the group in their talks with the elf. Upon finding the treasure the Tribe will be tasked to get the hopeful large load to Tyr. Luckily they are given some help by transporting the treasure by the governor’s friend within the Wavir Trading House, Rhotan Vor.

The group agrees to go and begin to make the long trek to the Canyon of Gothay. Their travels are not too hard except for the occasional raider attacks. Though one of them seemed different: one of the assailants was an arcane defiler and two of the elven archers that were with them made their escape saying to retreat back to base. None of their possessions helped to understand who they were or where they were from.

The group was victorious in their travels and, by late afternoon, they arrived at Toramund’s stronghold: The Silver Spring Oasis.

Day 7, Afternoon to Day 8, Night
10-26-12 session

The group met with Toramund who, after some persuasion, was able to give the Tribe information on where to find the Vault of Darom Madar. They also found out that the letter they gave him was about grave news of his son, Ravee who might be in danger in Tyr.

The group takes the caravan to the Canyon of Gothay where they take a day and a half to find the entrance to the vault. The caravan says they only have 3 days to find it before they leave for Tyr.

The group enters the antechamber of the vault and are attacked by zombies and skeletons who have been created to protect the vault from intruders. The group then spends the night there with no problems and get a good night’s rest.

Day 9, Morning
11-8-12 session

The Tribe continued further into the vault the following morning. They rush in as they know they only have today to clear the vault out and get back to the wagons. But they rush too quickly as they are confronted by more undead: ghosts and phantoms who wish for the group to leave their place of slumber. The heroes try to understand why these aberrations are angry and find that the stone pillar in the middle of the room is evil in nature, fueling the undead with rage. They destroy the stone and vanquish the phantoms. But it was a close call, Ja’th fell from a killing blow from one of the ghosts but, miraculously, got up. Upon being knocked out, he hears the voice of the original Chief telling him to get up and finish their quest as the thri-kreen’s job is yet from over, and the Chief is able to bring him back to his feet. The Chief says to find The Gardner in Tyr and they will tell them what the purpose of The Desert Seed is.

Day 9, Morning to Afternoon
12-27-12 session

The Tribe worked the special arcane lock on the large door to the Vault of Darom Madar. After easily bypassing the traps on the door, they step in to the large, treasure-laden room. But the coins are protected by the one who rightfully holds the treasure: Darom Madar himself! The now undead being immediately begins to decimate the crew and almost wins. But the group vanquishes (twice!) the oath wight, finally putting him to rest.

They look about the room and take their share of the treasure before reporting back to Rhotan Vor of their glorious find. But they are confronted outside in the canyon by the same elf assassins who got away from their skirmish the other day, this time bringing some friends of theirs. They thank the heroes for clearing out the vault and immediately attack the Tribe. The heroes, with the help of Rhotan Vor who heals Seluku in the midst of the fight, are just able to claim victory over the mysterious assassins. In the end, Ja’th is able to knock out and bind the defiler wizard who was with them in order to interrogate him later.

Day 9, Afternoon to Day 10, Afternoon
1-10-13 session

The group packed up the treasure with the wagons they brought. They interrogate the arcane defiler who reveals that they work for House Tsalaxa. They tie him up and throw him in the cart for now.

They begin their travels towards Tyr with the treasure found but are nervous of raiders and monsters who might attack the slow sand skiffs. During the night they are ambushed by a Silk Wyrm who tries to eat Nadarr but they drive the monster off as it slinks away into the night, licking its wounds.

They get up early in the morning and travel throughout the rest of the day and as the sun is about to go down for the night they see the city-state of Tyr. However, they are greeted by more assassins of House Tsalaxa (the Tribe presumes) and are attacked head on.
